Land Preparations
The preparation of land for the initial 2,000 Hectares of the Sugarcane Greenfield Project is well underway. Irrigation being a crucial element in cultivating high-quality sugarcane, measures have already been taken to guarantee that water is always available.
The Wami River, a reliable source of water, is located around 5 kilometers from our major supply reservoir. The river’s water will be pulled and collected in our main supply reservoir before being distributed to five distinct pumping stations.
Splitting of Zones
Our farming area was split into 5 different zones of 400 Hectares. For the first stage of the project, each zone will have its own pumping station, assuring an uninterrupted water supply over the whole 2,000 Hectares of land.
Drip
Irrigation
Bagamoyo Sugar Ltd has implemented a drip irrigation system, which ensures efficient water usage while also protecting the environment.
With our drip irrigation system in place, water is distributed directly from the pumping station to the root zone of the sugarcane, resulting in improved water resource management.
Sugarcane
Yield
When water drips into the soil, it splashes off all of the salt that is on the soil’s subsurface, pushing the salt away from the cane’s root zone and providing clean, unsalted water to the root systems. Fertilizers added to irrigation water also find their way to the roots without being hampered by salt in the soil.
Our drip irrigation system allows us to maintain the soil moisture in the root zone near field capacity throughout the crop duration which leads to better growth and higher cane yield.
